Troop 1214: Growing Leaders

About

What are the “Best Things” About Troop 1214 in Edgewater, MD?
In this “Boy-Led” Troop, we maintain a healthy balance between old fashioned fun and the meaningful work of progressing through the Scout ranks.  Combine this with the healthy monthly excursions to the great outdoors, PLUS the frequent Service Projects to give back to our communities, we provide every member of Troop 1214 unique life experiences that shape them into the leaders of tomorrow while having a good time! Today’s world is busy and complex.  Organized sports certainly have undeniable benefits in providing an outlet for the boundless energy of today’s young men (all too often pent up during “screen activities”) but there is NOTHING that will build character and prepare a boy to become a man in today’s world like Scouting! Join us, for a real “win-win-win” experience!  The Troop meets on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. in Edgewater, MD.

Troop Organization

The Troop is organized and managed by a group of older Scouts and facilitated by a group of highly experienced and trained adult Scouters. The youth leader of the Troop is the Senior Patrol Leader. He is elected each year by the Troop members. The Troop is organized into patrols. Each Patrol consists of a youth Patrol Leader and a youth Assistant Patrol Leader with 4-6 other Scouts. The Patrol Leaders are selected by the adult leaders and they select their assistants. Our summer program has a variety of fun outdoor skills such as: biking, hiking, golf, swimming, canoeing, fishing, and our annual cardboard boat race. We conduct a variety of service projects throughout the year in and around our local community and while camping.

Troop Camping Trip – District Spook-O-Ree – 18-20 October 2024

Last month the Troop supported River Hawk District's annual Webelos Woods event, Spook-O-Ree, at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation. This Halloween themed event served as a great venue to demonstrate Scout Skills, like fire building, to tons of Cub Scouts across the District. And it also let the Adults and Scouts have a little Halloween fun!

Troop Camping Trip – NRC Solomons Island – 13-15 September 2024

This month the Troop re-visited a campsite that we have not been to in years - NRC Solomons Island. The camping trip was a "back to basics" trip to reinforce our standards with our largely young and new Troop. We hiked the base perimeter on Saturday, to include along the beaches, and picked up trash as part of our conservation service project. It was an awesome trip and we plan to revisit next year!

Troop Annual Cardboard Boat Race

Each year we close out our Summer Fun with our annual Cardboard Boat Race. The Scouts are encouraged to research potential designs, Google is their friend (with their parents permission of course), of "unsinkable" cardboard boats in preparation for the race. Each Scout gets a couple of large sheets of cardboard, starts with three rolls of duct tape, some painter's plastic this year, and their imagination!
